NEXUS

A reminder that although we begin what feels like our darkest journey, we are not alone. Cancer patients are surrounded by family, friends and talented staff every step of the way. This art installation was in recognition that during these times sitting next to my father, he was grateful for the care he received.

Welcome to the Nexus Project!

Nexus Project details

It was  shortly after midnight, I was sitting in the emergency room with my father, who was seeking an answer to the intense pain he was experiencing the past two months. On that early morning, in September 2012, my father was diagnosed with stage four cancer.  This life changing moment rippled through our small, close-knit family.

Approximately 1,700 individuals begin their cancer journey at the Coborn Cancer Center in St. Cloud, MN, with an additional 3,300 individuals continuing their care from the previous year(s). Each patient is supported by 170 staff and volunteers – willing to walk alongside patients and their family members living with pain and grappling with uncertainty.

It was because of the care my father received over the course of three years, the Nexus project was created. This is my version of art therapy – showing thanks; using public art as a platform to contextualize the depth of my emotion and heartfelt appreciation.

On February 28, 2022  a temporary light installation will be placed in the new Healing Center attached to the Coborn Cancer Center. It will be comprised of 1,700 lengths of white ribbon representing the number of new patients that begin their journey annually.  White symbolizes unity – as it is comprised of all the colors within the spectrum. This will be perched on top of a clear box with 170 lightbulbs containing thank you notes to Cancer Center staff and volunteers.

PROJECT PHASES (3)

Give Thanks: Patients (current or former) and their families were invited to engage in the project by offering words of thanks to care providers at the Coborn Cancer Center.

Public Art Installation. A three dimensional piece of art will be installed at the Healing Center visually representing light, unity, appreciation and community.

A Small Thank You Gift: The installation will be dismantled  and pieces of the artwork containing notes from the community will be gifted to staff and volunteers.

We are inevitably connected – converging as a community; seeking light amid the darkest of days.

On Exhibit through April 2022.

The installation was located at the CentraCare’s Healing Center. As a consideration to the individuals currently working or engaged in treatments, the site of the installation is restricted to patients and/or staff only at this time.
